Phragmites Cutting
November 22 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Volunteers are needed to help cut introduced Phragmites at the west side of Oshawa Second Marsh. Phragmites is not a desired plant species in our habitats. It displaces our native vegetation, competes for water and nutrients, affects biodiversity by growing in a monoculture and alters the nutrient cycling of the area.
The Phragmites at Oshawa Second Marsh was treated the first week of October and it is safe to handle. We will be focusing our efforts on multiple stands of Phragmites along the west side of Oshawa Second Marsh.
Gloves will be provided. We have some tools to share. Please bring hand clippers or shears, if you have them.
This is a great opportunity for high school students to earn some community service volunteer hours.
Dogs and smoking are not permitted. There is no washroom on site.
This project is supported by funds from Canada Water Agency’s Great Lakes Freshwater Ecosystem Initiative and the following partners: Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority, Ducks Unlimited Canada, City of Oshawa, Friends of Second Marsh and Hamilton Oshawa Port Authority.
